10 Photoshop Tips for Website Design

  1. Sketch your design out before attempting to build it or augment it in Photoshop. It’s easier for a web designer, or anyone for that matter, to have a clear vision before starting a project.
  2. Set up the grid, ruler system and snapping option in Photoshop. As a web designer you need to know where each pixel will be placed and having the measurements will save time and the hassle of revamping a design.
  3. Choose your colors and stick with them. Using number values will keep this consistent.
  4. Customize Photoshop. This is your workspace as a web designer, allowing it to be user friendly and tailored to your needs will make the usage experience more efficient and pleasant.
  5. Organize your Photoshop platform. Keeping PSD layers in order and correctly naming files will save time when redesigning and/or changing items.
  6. Learn the Photoshop shortcuts, they will streamline the design process by saving valuable time for the web designer.
  7. Do not overuse effects. Less is typically more when it comes to design elements.
  8. Be very familiar with the Step Backward button, this will save a monumental amount of time if a mistake is made.
  9. Defaults are not your friend. As a web designer it’s all about customization. Customize brushes and other tools to compliment individual needs.
  10. Photoshop offers plug-ins, some excellent and some gratuitous, research the plug-ins available and any specifically tailored to web designers. Simple plug-ins can serve to save hours of time and still create custom looks.
